Thomas Cabell Wilson, M.D. of Beckley passed from this life October 9, 2018 at home with his wife Jessica in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.  He was born February 7, 1928 in Charleston, WV to Rebecca Vivian Cabell Wilson and Charles Bruce Wilson.  He grew up in South Charleston during World War II and proudly supported the war effort as a member of the Sea Scouts, as his older brothers Charles and Bob enlisted and served in the U.S. Navy.  The fourth sibling of this robust crew was his younger brother Jim.

Tom attended Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, then went to medical school at Medical College of Virginia where he met the southside-Virginia lady who would become his wife, a pharmacy student by the name of Mary Lou Motley.  After Tom’s graduation from MCV in 1954, they were married on February 5, 1955 during Tom’s internship training in Charleston, WV.  Subsequently, Tom and Mary were stationed in Naples, Italy while Tom served as a physician in the U.S. Navy from 1956 to 1957.  Their first child, Tom, Jr. was born there.  After fulfilling his service commitment, Tom and Mary returned to West Virginia for residency training at Charleston General Hospital, where Haile and John were born.

Dr. Wilson served countless individuals with medical needs throughout southern West Virginia and southwest Virginia during his 55-year medical career.  He had the distinction of working professionally as a coal-camp doctor, a pathologist, a family practitioner and finally as an emergency-room physician.  He started the first E.R. in Beckley in the late 1960s at Raleigh General Hospital and staffed it as the sole physician on call for the first several months of its existence.

He is survived by his beautiful and devoted wife Jessica Williams Wilson of Winston-Salem, whom he married August 19, 2014; his younger brother James Bruce Wilson of Houston, Texas; his sons Thomas C. Wilson, Jr. of Brightwaters, NY and his wife Helen; Charles Haile Wilson of Essex Junction, VT and his wife Janet; and John Motley Wilson of Hanover, NH and his wife Kimberly.  He leaves eight wonderful grandchildren: Sean, Mary, Thomas, Kate, Lily, Daniel, Rebecca and Rachel; and one great-grandson Colin; as well as nieces and nephews Chuck Wilson of St. Albans, Becky Wilson Liljegren of Kansas City, Nancy Wilson McDaniel of St. Albans, Charles Bruce Wilson III of Kerrville, Texas, Lea Wilson of Arizona, James Bruce Wilson, Jr. and Beth Wilson of Houston, Texas and Faith Lynn Sattler Antonioni of Maryland.

Dr. Wilson will be remembered for his commitment to compassion, honor and the care of the most vulnerable people in our society during their hours of greatest need. He is also remembered by his sons as the greatest dad in the world.  “We stand on the shoulders of giants.”
