Memorial services will be held on Friday, August 3rd at 11:00 a.m. in the Beckley Presbyterian Church, 203 South Kanawha Street. Reverend Cameron Harkness of the Beckley Presbyterian Church will be officiating the service. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.
Shirley Walters Fox
Shirley Walters Fox, 86, of Beckley, West Virginia, passed away on July 27, 2018.
Born on March 11, 1932, in Fairmont, North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Ralph Ethelbert Walters and Zelma Snow Walters.
She grew up in North Carolina with her parents and nine brothers and sisters and graduated from Clarkton High School in 1950. She attended Campbell and Lynchburg Colleges, and then graduated from the Medical College of Virginia with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Technology, and as president of her class. During her senior year, she met her husband, Dr. Lewis Fox, who she married in 1957. Over the next few years, they welcomed two daughters into their life, Nancy and Lynn. While raising them, she worked at her husband’s medical practice performing his lab work. Years later, she taught medical terminology classes at Beckley College and also ran a dress shop, Fox-Andys. Through the years, she enjoyed participating in sports including tennis, golf, and snow skiing; and she loved cooking, entertaining, flower arranging, sewing, and painting.
She was very active in the Beckley community, and her civic involvement included the Raleigh County Medical Auxiliary (past President), the Phymosia Garden Club (past President), the Beckley Junior Women’s Club, and the Beckley Art Center. She was also a devoted member of the Beckley Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by her daughter, Lynn Evans and her husband Kenneth; her grandchildren: Christopher Drescher and his wife Abigail, Molly Widney and her husband Evan, Ashley Evans, and Ethan Evans; her great grandson, Fox Drescher; her siblings: Jerry Walters, Bobbie Walters and his wife Lois, Dick Walters and his wife Kathy, Laura Rice and her husband Ed, Bennett Walters and his wife Diane, Mary Lee Walters, and Brenda Bryan and her husband James; her sister-in-law, Nancy Walters; and her son-in-law, Alan Drescher.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Lewis Fox; her oldest daughter, Nancy Drescher; her brothers: Gilbert Walters and his wife Allie, and Ralph Walters, Jr.; and her sisters-in-law: Margaret Walters and Rachel Walters.
