Rosa Fama Shucet
With better places to visit and loved ones to see, Rosa Agnes Fama Shucet peacefully started a new life on July 14, 2018. Rosa was born on October 22, 1917. The first to greet her was her husband Nick Shucet who departed six years earlier, and her parents Filippo (Phillip) and Annuziata (Nancy) Fama. She was also welcomed by her brothers, her sister and family including Fama, Sparacino, Sciocchetti, Briguglio, Bowden and Rodriguez. A brother, Tony Fama, continues to live in Beckley.
Rosa was born in Mabscott and called Whitestick Street home for 40 years. In 1957 Rosa and Nick moved to Jefferson Street in Beckley. For many years Rosa worked alongside her brothers and Nick at Fama’s Shoe Store on Neville Street. After Nick passed she lived in Virginia but remained a life- long West Virginian at heart with fond memories of Mabscott and Beckley. Recently she would spontaneously break out into song with a rousing chorus of The West Virginia Hills. Homes, restaurants, or in the car, nothing stopped her. If Rosa felt the urge “O the West Virginia Hills” rang out loudly.
Rosa loved her church, St. Francis de Sales, where she lovingly attended Mass, sang in the choir and was a member of the Ladies of St. Francis. While not able to easily attend Mass the past few years, her spirituality and faith in God remained strong and true.
Rosa and Nick’s son, Philip, was blessed to see both parents cross the century mark and is happy to know they are together again. Four grandchildren, John Philip, Nicholas Kessel, Esther Rose, and Isabella Joeann shared fun times with their grandparents playing games and enjoying many home-cooked Italian meals. Rosa was especially fortunate to know three great-grandchildren, Nina, Meko and Roman.
