There will be a Service of Remembrance on Monday, February 19th at 2:00 pm in the Oak Grove Christian Church. Julian Grubb and Ken Hawes will be officiating.
Richard A. “Buddy” Rice
On Saturday, February 17th, 2018, our most cherished, Richard “Buddy”’ Rice went to be with the Lord at the Veterans Area Medical Center. In declining health the past year, he was in his 83rd year.
Affectionately known as “Buddy” all his life, Richard Arlen Rice was born on May 7th, 1934, at Sullivan. He was the son of Cecil and Mabel Carter Rice. In addition to his parents, Buddy was preceded in death by his sister, Betty Scales and a brother, Jerry. He is the fond brother of Sandra Wood and her husband, James of Daniels.
In 1953, Buddy married an Oak Grove girl, Virginia Jennings. To their union was born one son, Richard Jr., Buddy and Genny have made their home at Oak Grove for the past 40 years. They worshiped at the Oak Grove Christian Church. Their son, Rick makes his home at Mount Tabor.
Buddy served in the US Navy, stationed with the Commander Fleet, Logistic Air Wing at Patuxent River, Maryland. He also served on the aircraft carrier, USS Leyete CVS32
The owner and operator of Buddy’s Linoleum for 20 years, he retired from the Raleigh County Board of Education, Central Office.
Buddy’s interests included reading, watching football, racing, spending time with family, gardening and working on his lawn. Faith and family were his mainstays. He served on various church boards. Buddy immensely enjoyed the fellowship of church dinners and being with his church family.
There will be a Service of Remembrance on Monday, February 19th at 2:00 pm in the Oak Grove Christian Church. Julian Grubb and Ken Hawes will be officiating. Buddy will be laid to rest in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at 12 noon in the church .
