Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Saturday, July 7, at the First United Methodist Church at 217 S. Heber Street, Beckley, WV, with the Rev. Dr. Bob Stoddard and the Rev. David Rumberg officiating. Neal Lacey will serve as eulogist, and music will be provided Pam and Mark Schrader, and Mike Farris. A private burial will follow in the Sunset Memorial Park at Beckley with the Rev. Dr. Gregory Hayes presiding.The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., Friday, July 6, at the Melton Mortuary at 1200 Harper Road and one hour prior to the services on Saturday at the church.

Mary Esther Rhudy

Mary Esther Gibson Rhudy, 87, of Ewart Avenue in Beckley passed away Thursday, June 28, at Harper Mills Nursing Home following a long illness.

Born Mary Esther Gibson April 1, 1931, at Tazewell, Va, she was the second of three children born to the late Leroy and Ida Mae Rasnick Gibson. She was preceded in death by her brother, Marvin Bruce Gibson, and his wife, Mildred; and a special cousin, Jane Conn, who was raised by her parents. Jane was married to the late Clifford Conn.

Esther, as she is known by friends and family, spent her childhood at Tazewell, where she graduated from Tazewell High School and McLain’s Business College. A resident of Beckley since 1956, Esther was the secretary of First United Methodist Church, 217 S. Heber St., Beckley, for 35 years, where she also was a long-time member of the church choir and an active member of the church congregation.
Esther is remembered as a loving, caring and dedicated wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend.

Esther was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Walter Carl Rhudy, and by her grandson, Christopher Robert Rhudy. She is the devoted mother of Robert L. Rhudy of Macungie, Pa.; Carla Rhudy Wilson and her husband Niel of Denver, Colo.; and Vaughn Rhudy and his wife Cindy Scott Rhudy of Ghent; the doting grandmother of Sgt. Robert Carl Rhudy and his wife Adela, and Matthew Brandon Rhudy and his wife Stephanie; Jed Wilson and his wife Emily, and Jessica Wilson; Jonathan Scott, Joshua Vaughn and Rebecca Jane Rhudy; great-grandmother of Owen and Cole Rhudy, Forrest and Harper Wilson, and Daniel Rhudy; the dear sister of Macie Rasnick and her husband Don of Tazewell, Va.; the fond sister-in-law of Nonye LaRue of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Annis Conn of Tazewell, Va.; a large extended family, many nieces and nephews, her church family and neighbors.
