Lawrence Roger Elswick

Lawrence Roger Elswick, 71, of Prosperity, WV, passed away on June 8 at Bowers Hospice Center in Cranberry after a long battle with cancer.

He was born on Packs Branch in Fayette County to the late Melvin Hursell and Nora Lee Elswick. He graduated in 1965 from Mount Hope High School. He was starting center on the football team and played in the 1964 Class AA Championship game.

He served four years in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam era and worked a number of jobs after leaving the Navy before settling into a career in radio. He worked many years as an announcer and on-air personality for several radio stations in the Beckley area.

Roger later became an award-winning independent insurance agent servicing the entire State of West Virginia. He returned later in life to his first love, radio, and worked in the production side at WBT radio in Charlotte, NC. He later retired from that work to concentrate on his PC repair business, A+ Computers in Prosperity.

Roger was an avid fan of WVU football and basketball, attending games whenever he was able. He was a loving father, son, brother, and uncle. He was a very caring and supportive human being to all his friends and family. His friends and family will miss his many stories, jokes, laughter, rich baritone voice, and general infectious sillliness.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin Hursell Elswick, and Nora Lee (Wagenor) Elswick, and two brothers, Melvin Dale Elswick and Norman Douglas Elswick, both of Pax, WV. Survivors include his son, Justin David Elswick and four brothers, Jerry Lynn Elswick and wife Emilia (Lustria) Elswick of Packs Branch; Terry Dwayne Elswick of Pax, Stanley William Elswick and wife, Sharon Marcus, of Brookeville, MD; Marvin Keith Elswick of Newcastle, CO; and one sister, Penny Ellen (Elswick) McMillen, and many nieces and nephews.
