In keeping with Grizzly’s wishes, a private celebration of his life will be held at the Beckley VA Medical Center. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Bowers Hospice House.

James E. (Grizzly) Abshire

James E. Abshire (Grizzly), 75 of Bolt passed away peacefully on Friday, February 2, 2018, at home surrounded by his family. He was born in Elkhorn, WV on September 21, 1942, and lived most of his life in West Virginia.

“Grizzly” was a passionate man who enjoyed his pets, books, cooking, and especially his Harley Davidson motorcycle rides with his wife and riding partner, Linda.

He was a soldier in the United States Army as a young man and continued serving his country during his retirement years as a volunteer at the Beckley VA Medical Center where he enjoyed getting to know and serving his fellow veterans. Grizzly was a member of the Free Masons and Shriners.

He married the love of his life, Linda McGraw Massey, on October 4, 1993. They enjoyed many adventures together. One of their most special was riding cross-country to California on their Harley Davidson. This is just one of many special memories Linda will cherish.

Grizzly is survived by his wife Linda of 25 years and their combined children, Terri Abshire of Smith Mountain Lake, VA, Dreama Spangler of True, WV, Tammy Scarborough and husband David of Beckley, WV, Jack Massey and wife Beth of Bolt, WV, and Jeff Massey and wife Kristen of Glen Daniel, WV. He has 20 grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Grizzly was preceded in death and now reunited with his grandson Woodrow Gabriel Spangler whom he loved dearly.

A special thank you to his wonderful hospice nurse Tammy who took such great care of him.
