Catherine Carney Obituary

Catherine Blanar Carney

On Monday, July 3rd, 2017, our cherished sister and aunt, Catherine Carney passed away in her 79th year.

Christened Catherine Anne Blanar, she was the second of three daughters born to John Andrew and Rosalee Bozo Blanar. Catherine was born on November 9th, 1937, at Scarbro. She is the dear sister of Julia Marie Blanar Daniel and Veronica Blanar of Beckley.

Catherine's childhood was spent at Scarbro. The Blanar family worshiped at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church where Catherine attended parochial school through the eighth grade. She would graduate from Collins High School in 1955, and further her studies at St. Francis Nursing School in Charleston graduating in 1958.

After nursing school, she served a brief stint in the US Air Force. A very dedicated nurse, Catherine's early work years were at the Beckley Hospital and Veterans Area Medical Center here in Beckley. She then began a long career at the Charleston Area Medical Center, General Division retiring after nearly 40 years of service.

Catherine would marry George Carney of Poca on December 24th, 1964. They made their home in Poca. Catherine and George were fortunate to travel extensively throughout the US and overseas. Although they had a wonderful life together, they suffered the loss of three infant children, James Lee in 1965, Jerry Allen in 1969, and Rose Evelyn in 1971.

After George's passing, Catherine moved to Beckley to be near her sisters. She had many interests, raising flowers, crocheting, knitting and cross stitching. Catherine loved a good game of bingo and was not a happy camper if she did not win. She and her sisters were very close and were often referred to as the "Three Musketeers."

In addition to Julia and Veronica, she leaves to cherish her memory her nieces, Mary Beth Shorts and her husband, Danny and their son, Brian and his wife, Stefani and their children, Thomas and Charles; Missy Johnson and her husband, David and their children, Jeffrey and Scott; nephew, Michael Eugene Carney and his fiancé, Amanda Greer; a brother-in-law, Mike Carney and his wife Doris. Brother-in-law, Von Daniel has preceded her in death as well. Catherine was fortunate to have a large extended family; among them is her only surviving aunt, Rosie Bozo.

The Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated on Friday, July 7th at 11:00 am at St. Francis de Sales Church, 614 South Oakwood Avenue, Beckley. The Very Rev. Fr. Paul Wharton, V.F. will be the celebrant. The family is receiving friends at the church at 10:00 am. The Rite of Committal will follow at the Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens at Red House, near Poca. Catherine will be laid to rest beside George and her children. The committal service is planned at 3:00pm, possibly at 4:00 considering the traffic issues on Friday afternoon.
